This week the kids lerened how important the elderly in our life!!
The sentence of this week was taken
from Leviticus 19:32 in Parsha K’doshim. The verse speaks about the elderly and
how we view them in this world. In this verse, G-d teaches that the world may belong
to the young people, but it’s impossible for us to exist without the wisdom and
experience of the elderly.
The students learned two important
values from this verse. The first part of the verse says, “In the presence of
an old person shall you rise.” It is understood to mean that when you are
sitting and someone elderly comes near, you must rise and give your seat. The
students also learned that in Israel it is very common to ride the bus, and on
every bus there are special stickers that have this quote in Hebrew. Of course,
they transferred this quote to American culture, and expanded the meaning of
the sticker to mean that when you are seated at a park, a synagogue, a train,
or anywhere else, the same rule stands. The second part of the verse says,
“…and you should honor the presence of a sage…” In this part of the verse, the
students learned that one must first honor the age, and additionally acknowledge
how blessed one is to reach such an age. The deeper meaning is that part of the
students’ path in life is to internalize the elderlies’ wisdom and experience and
the lessons they pass down.
All classes created bumper stickers
expressing these values. The 6th Grade will make an authentic bumper
sticker to put on their parents’ car with the Hebrew verse. In addition, Morah
Orna’s 7th Grade class had an art class with Mrs. Ganz, and together
they created “hand to hand” projects demonstrating how the elderly teaches
different ideals to the youth. You are invited to come to the second floor near
the Hebrew office and view all of the beautiful bumper stickers and art
projects.
It
was great listening to kids talking about their experience; grandparents,
Bar/Bat Mitzva project and more.
