Nov 29

This week the kids lerened how important the elderly in our life!!

The sentence of this week was taken from Leviticus 19:32 in Parsha K’doshim. The verse speaks about the elderly and how we view them in this world. In this verse, G-d teaches that the world may belong to the young people, but it’s impossible for us to exist without the wisdom and experience of the elderly.

The students learned two important values from this verse. The first part of the verse says, “In the presence of an old person shall you rise.” It is understood to mean that when you are sitting and someone elderly comes near, you must rise and give your seat. The students also learned that in Israel it is very common to ride the bus, and on every bus there are special stickers that have this quote in Hebrew. Of course, they transferred this quote to American culture, and expanded the meaning of the sticker to mean that when you are seated at a park, a synagogue, a train, or anywhere else, the same rule stands. The second part of the verse says, “…and you should honor the presence of a sage…” In this part of the verse, the students learned that one must first honor the age, and additionally acknowledge how blessed one is to reach such an age. The deeper meaning is that part of the students’ path in life is to internalize the elderlies’ wisdom and experience and the lessons they pass down.

All classes created bumper stickers expressing these values. The 6th Grade will make an authentic bumper sticker to put on their parents’ car with the Hebrew verse. In addition, Morah Orna’s 7th Grade class had an art class with Mrs. Ganz, and together they created “hand to hand” projects demonstrating how the elderly teaches different ideals to the youth. You are invited to come to the second floor near the Hebrew office and view all of the beautiful bumper stickers and art projects.
It was great listening to kids talking about their experience; grandparents, Bar/Bat Mitzva project and more.

Monday 11th, 2012

All classes learned a new song from the Davis Album:
"Ze Hayom" This is the day. The students learned that the verse s were taken for the Book Of T'hilim"- Psalms - Poems were written by Davis the King!!
This is the info from rabbi Micah

Zeh HaYom is based on Psalm 118. Psalm 118 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving that is a part of Hallel—the special collection of psalms chanted and sung on major Jewish holidays. The phrase, “Zeh hayom asah Adonai, nagilah v’nismecha vo” (Psalm 118:24) often appears on wedding and b’nei mitzvah invitations as it means, “This is the day that Adonai has made—let us exult and rejoice on it.” The other Hebrew in the song is a very common expression of praise, “Hodu l’Adonai ki tov, ki l’olam hasdo” (Psalm 118:1). This means, “Praise Adonai, for Adonai is good, God’s steadfast love is eternal.”
The English verse in the song, “All praise to the One, shining like the sun” is meant to be a poetic interpretation of Psalm 118:1. Just as the sun is always shining (somewhere) so too God is always with us, bestowing blessings. Just as it’s cloudy some days and we can’t see the sun, sometimes we don’t see how God is with us.
This song is meant to have a southern rock/ Allman Brothers vibe. I think it’s very important that music reflect the spirit of the place where it’s created. You can hear the southern rock vibe in the guitar solo and the slide guitar work throughout.

All blocks- Need to learn the 2 P'sukim By heart:
זה היום עשה ה', נגילה ונשמחה בו"
הודו לה' כי טוב, כי לעולם חסדו"

Rabin- Soldier in the Army of Peace
חייל בצבא שלום

Israel Prime minister Yizhak Rabin was assassinated on the eve of November 4th, 1995 at the end of a mass rally in support of the peace process. The three gunshots radical right-wing Israeli youth fired into his back and ended his life. Yitzhak Rabin was 73 years old when he died.

At the Davis Academy we are commemorating Yitzhak Rabin by learning about the important milestone in his life, and his contribution to the State of Israel and the Jewish nation.

Monday Oct 15th

Shalom!

The sentence of the week was taken from the Talmud (מדרש הלכה)  Kol Israel arevim ze la ze, All of Israel is Responsible for Each Other. (כל ישראל ערבים זה לזה)

The students learned that this sentence originally referred to the Roman times when Jews had to pay taxes and if they could not afford it, there was an understanding guarantee that friends and family would help them. Even today, when someone in Israel wants to take a loan from the bank, he or she must have a guarantor (Arev) that will be responsible for the loan repayment if the person is not able to pay.

Today, we derive the moral understanding from this verse to mean that we are bonded together in helping and supporting each other in many ways. The students learned this concept through the song written by Rabbi Micah.

The song helped the students understand that there is a strong bonding between all of the Jews in the world, Israel, Torah and G-d. The students learned that Jews are related to the Torah, Israel, and G-d in their heart and soul. This is only one piece of the puzzle, Jewish law (halacha) teaches us that we must take action, including helping and supporting each other, comforting one another, giving (tzadaka), and model appropriate behavior.

We spoke about real life examples and then the students sang the song that was originally sang by Mr. Kudlats, Ms. Kendrick, Nicole Webb, and Hailey Busby. We will conclude with the words of the song for your enjoyment:

Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh L’Zeh

                Kol Yisrael

Verse 1:

                One people, many voices

Many faces, many names

One Torah, seventy faces

Many paths to lead us home.

Verse 2: One God, speaking every moment

One Hope to bring us home

One God, one Emanation

One Source, one Goal

Verse 3: Many homes, one homeland

Many memories, common faith

Many prayers, some are answered

Many beats, one heart

Bridge:  We are tied through bonds of loving kindness

Kol Yisrael we stand united

May we seek peace and may we find it

May joy dance from our tongues

Extra Day of Holidays

You may notice that the number of days of some holidays do not accord with what the Bible specifies. In most cases, we celebrate one more day than the Bible requires. There is an interesting reason for this additional day.

The Jewish calendar is lunar, with each month beginning on the new moon. The new months used to be determined by observation. When the new moon was observed, the Sanhedrin declared the beginning of a new month and sent out messengers to tell people when the month began. People in distant communities could not always be notified of the new moon (and therefore, of the first day of the month), so they did not know the correct day to celebrate. They knew that the old month would be either 29 or 30 days, so if they didn't get notice of the new moon, they celebrated holidays on both possible days.

This practice of celebrating an extra day was maintained as a custom even after we adopted a precise mathematical calendar, because it was the custom of our ancestors. This extra day is not celebrated by Israelis, regardless of whether they are in Israel at the time of the holiday, because it is not the custom of their ancestors, but it is celebrated by everybody else, even if they are visiting Israel at the time of the holiday.

Rosh Hashanah is celebrated as two days everywhere (in Israel and outside Israel), because it occurs on the first day of a month. Messengers were not dispatched on the holiday, so even people in Israel did not know whether a new moon had been observed, and everybody celebrated two days. The practice was also maintained as a custom after the mathematical calendar was adopted.

Yom Kippur is celebrated only one day everywhere, because extending the holiday's severe restrictions for a second day would cause an undue hardship

Shana Tova and Gemar Chateemah Tovaha to all,

L'shanna-tova. Friday 9/14th

Here we go again with the verse of the week משפט השבוע !  We decided to start this year with a beautiful, popular Israeli song called: אני ואתה נשנה את העולם Ani V’Atah Neshaneh Et HaOlam – “You and I will change the world” in English.

This song emphasizes our ability and obligation to make this world a better place to live.  It also indicates that it may sometimes be difficult to make change in the world, though it is worth it.

The kids watched a video with Israeli celebrities joining Israelis with hearing loss to sing the song in sign language.

The kids were deeply inspired.  This song inspires our students, as they learn that they all have the opportunity, and obligation, to make a difference.

in our Kabbalat Shabbat / Rosh Hashanah celebration, we will sing this song as a community.  The lyrics are attached in transliteration so you can sing along!
