Nov 29

This week the kids lerened how important the elderly in our life!!

The sentence of this week was taken from Leviticus 19:32 in Parsha K’doshim. The verse speaks about the elderly and how we view them in this world. In this verse, G-d teaches that the world may belong to the young people, but it’s impossible for us to exist without the wisdom and experience of the elderly.

The students learned two important values from this verse. The first part of the verse says, “In the presence of an old person shall you rise.” It is understood to mean that when you are sitting and someone elderly comes near, you must rise and give your seat. The students also learned that in Israel it is very common to ride the bus, and on every bus there are special stickers that have this quote in Hebrew. Of course, they transferred this quote to American culture, and expanded the meaning of the sticker to mean that when you are seated at a park, a synagogue, a train, or anywhere else, the same rule stands. The second part of the verse says, “…and you should honor the presence of a sage…” In this part of the verse, the students learned that one must first honor the age, and additionally acknowledge how blessed one is to reach such an age. The deeper meaning is that part of the students’ path in life is to internalize the elderlies’ wisdom and experience and the lessons they pass down.

All classes created bumper stickers expressing these values. The 6th Grade will make an authentic bumper sticker to put on their parents’ car with the Hebrew verse. In addition, Morah Orna’s 7th Grade class had an art class with Mrs. Ganz, and together they created “hand to hand” projects demonstrating how the elderly teaches different ideals to the youth. You are invited to come to the second floor near the Hebrew office and view all of the beautiful bumper stickers and art projects.
It was great listening to kids talking about their experience; grandparents, Bar/Bat Mitzva project and more.

Monday 11th, 2012

All classes learned a new song from the Davis Album:
"Ze Hayom" This is the day. The students learned that the verse s were taken for the Book Of T'hilim"- Psalms - Poems were written by Davis the King!!
This is the info from rabbi Micah

Zeh HaYom is based on Psalm 118. Psalm 118 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving that is a part of Hallel—the special collection of psalms chanted and sung on major Jewish holidays. The phrase, “Zeh hayom asah Adonai, nagilah v’nismecha vo” (Psalm 118:24) often appears on wedding and b’nei mitzvah invitations as it means, “This is the day that Adonai has made—let us exult and rejoice on it.” The other Hebrew in the song is a very common expression of praise, “Hodu l’Adonai ki tov, ki l’olam hasdo” (Psalm 118:1). This means, “Praise Adonai, for Adonai is good, God’s steadfast love is eternal.”
The English verse in the song, “All praise to the One, shining like the sun” is meant to be a poetic interpretation of Psalm 118:1. Just as the sun is always shining (somewhere) so too God is always with us, bestowing blessings. Just as it’s cloudy some days and we can’t see the sun, sometimes we don’t see how God is with us.
This song is meant to have a southern rock/ Allman Brothers vibe. I think it’s very important that music reflect the spirit of the place where it’s created. You can hear the southern rock vibe in the guitar solo and the slide guitar work throughout.

All blocks- Need to learn the 2 P'sukim By heart:
זה היום עשה ה', נגילה ונשמחה בו"
הודו לה' כי טוב, כי לעולם חסדו"
